Fundamental Defense Drills by Mark Chapman

Quick Hitters Plays by Mark Chapman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Fundamental Defense Drills by Mark Chapman
(Various Coaches)

The following are three drills I picked up from different coaches that are great to use early in the season as a way to develop good fundamental defensive skills. They may seem very basic and easy but I really enjoy how as a coach you get the chance to watch and correct some early problems. As coaches work through the year they get frustrated as players reach, stand up instead of staying in stance, lose sight of the ball or their man, or even get tired because of lack of conditioning. These drills used a couple times a week can train your players in the basic function of defensive play and allow them build off of those skills throughout the season.

Fundamental Defense Drills: No screen drill

This is a drill is from Coach Thad Matta and used to get players to work on changing direction and exploding into their next movement as quickly as possible. The cones act as screeners and the defender has to avoid the screen while sprinting through the drill as quickly as possible. Players get competitive and compared times while working on avoiding getting screened.

Fundamental Defense Drills: Otterbein Closeouts

I picked this drill up from a local women’s college team. Keys are the close down 2 big steps with 2-3 smaller choppy steps as you get closer to the ball/cone and the defensive slide back to the center cone. We have our players defensive slid back facing the baseline since we influence the ball that direction. This gets them to work on the footwork necessary to be good defensive players in our system.

Fundamental Defense Drills: Perfect 2 on 2

This drill was shared with coaches at the OHSAA clinic in 2013 by Tricia Cullop. Coach Cullop is the Head Women’s Basketball coach for the University of Toledo. Very basic 2 on 2 setup but she has some rules to add some structure to the drill. The offense is only allowed to use 3 dribbles. Defensive players must talk and are not allowed to let the ball go to the middle (in the lane). This rule is specific to her defensive principles so may need to be adjusted to fit your philosophy.

We have a new basketball coaching contributor in Mark Chapman He is doing an excellent job in providing basketball coaching clinic notes, basketball drills, and basketball plays. He is the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Hamilton Township High School in Columbus, Ohio. I think that you will enjoy the basketball shooting drills that Coach Chapman gave us.
