Outside the borders of Iowa, Fred Hoiberg has always been considered a pretty darn good basketball player, a high level recruit who had offers from Stanford and Arizona as well as an football offer from Nebraska. He was a four year starter in the Big Eight Conference who averaged 20 points per game in his last two years. He was a second round NBA draft pick by the Indiana Pacers. He was a role player and solid locker room guy for his ten years in the league. He is a man whose basketball mind was so respected that the Minnesota Timberwolves front office hired him after his playing career was done.

Coach Fred Hoiberg has a binder that is filled with plays. It’s the up-tempo offense that he runs with some goofy names for sets. The Up-tempo NBA style offense has been hugely successful for Fred Hoibgerg in both wins and the NCAA Tournament Last season, the Iowa State Cyclones finished sixth in the nation in scoring, first in assists, eighth in average length of possession. These stats can be traced back to his coaching philosophy that began in Minnesota where he spent hours watching film alongside Hall of Famer Kevin McHale.
