Indiana Pacers Side Pick And Roll
- 1 comes off 5’s UCLA/Brush Screen on the wing entry to 3.
- 3 looks to pass over top to 1 if x1 and x5 fall asleep and allow a clean cut to the rim. 1 must finish the cut all the way to the rim no matter what.
- 4 fills to the top of the key area to get better spacing for the subsequent pick and roll action. If 4 is a good shooter, like David West, it is added bonus and makes the action even more difficult to defend.
- After 5 screens for 1, he immediately goes to set a Side PNR for 3.
- 2 downscreens or pin screens for 1 emptying out of the lane, depending on where 3 decides to do with the ball.
- The first looks are:
- 3 making a scoring move, getting into the paint and making a play
- Hitting the roll man, especially if the defense is trapping/hard hedging on the screen
- 5 rolls or pops to space where he can safely receive the ball and create a long rotation for the help defenders
- 5 can roll into a post if there is a switch or a significant size advantage
- If the ball goes to 5, he has several options if there is no direct shot available
- Most likely if the ball handler is trapped or there is a hard hedge, 5 catches the ball with the defense rotating over and playing with a momentary 4on3 advantage
- 4 dives into the paint, drawing the attention of the weakside help defenders
- 1 and 2 look for the skip pass as usually there is one defender playing the two of them as the defense zones up the weakside
- 2 can also make a decision to set a pin screen on X1, trying to get 1 more open for the jumper.
- 3 can also pass to 4 who looks quickly to 5 rolling
- If 5 is not open then 4 reverses the ball to 1 coming off a down screen from 2
- 2 clears through and 4 follows the ball for the second pick and roll off the possession
- The court is spaced with a weakside “Triangle Away”
- 1 and 4 play off the Pick and Roll and all the similar options are available with an additional duckin post up option for 5
