I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Frank Layden NBA Utah Jazz Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached are three options from former Utah Jazz Head Coach Frank Layden. Layden started his career with the Utah Jazz as general manager in 1979. In 1981, he added the role of head coach and coached the Jazz from 1981 to 1989. During that span, he led the Jazz to a Midwest Division Championship in 1984 and five consecutive playoff appearances from 1983 – 1987. Layden was named the NBA Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year in 1983-1984. He became president of the Utah Jazz after retiring from coaching and held that position until 1999. Before making his way to the NBA, Layden coached at his alma mater, Niagara, and helped the Purple Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament once and the NIT twice. He left the college game to take an assistant job with the Atlanta Hawks. From there, he moved on to join the Jazz.

Frank Layden Utah Jazz Offense – Flex Stagger
In this option, 1 dribbles down to the left wing as 3 moves up to set a screen for 4 at the top of the key. 1 looks for 4 posting up or for 3 popping to the top of the key. If neither option is open, 4 moves out to set a flex screen for 5. After setting the screen, 4 cuts up off of a staggered screen from 2 and 3. 1 looks to pass to 5 at the basket or to 4 for a shot.

The option is just like option 1 except that 4 doesn’t step out to set the flex screen. Instead, 1 dribbles towards the top of the key as 3 and 5 set a staggered screen for 2. After 2 clears the screen, 5 sets a flare screen for 3 who moves out to the wing for a shot.

In the last option, 4 screens up for 3 who cuts to the ball-side low post. After setting the screen, 4 moves out to set a wing ball-screen for 1. 1 drives middle as 4 rolls to the basket and 5 screens in for 2.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
