I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

An elite coach must have:

Teaching Skills
Communication Skills
Organization Skills
Motivational Skills
Under Pressure Skills
Undisciplined players are coached by undisciplined coaches. Players respect organization,
discipline and structure – Dick

Three “C”s – Clear, Consistent, Confident | Fran Fraschilla | 2013 Masters in Coaching Clinic

What is your 1st 3minutes of the game philosophy? His is “shove it down their throat”

Three people make adjustments at halftime – winning team, losing team and referees. So ALWAYS
attack the rim to start the 2nd half

In practice, played “Down 8 / 3Min to go” everyday. Made players adjust on the fly and the game
played out differently every single day. For instance, if Team A hit a three right away it makes
the entire segment go differently as opposed to if Team A turns it over. Allowed players to coach
themselves, allowed assistant coaches to coach

Call all your counters “AGAIN”. For example, “Georgia” is a set play. The counter to the same play
is called “Georgia Again”. That way the defense hears “Run Georgia Again” and they think it’s the
same exact play when actually its different.

Do you have a “COMEBACK PLAN”? |Fran Fraschilla | 2013 Masters in Coaching Clinic

Players need to know how to effectively comeback late in the game:

1) Stop clock as much as possible
2) Must offensive rebound – send 4 and sometimes 5 to the offensive glass because normally other
team is not pushing hard when they are up late
3) Who do you foul and HOW do you foul?
4) What is your foul signal from the sideline?
5) What is your goal in fouling – steals, jumpballs, foul
6) Time Out organization (where to sit and make sure subs are sitting/standing next to who they
might replace so
they know what they are doing when someone fouls out
7) Do you have a comeback “platoon”
8) Do you have a hurry up offense or quick hitter set for threes/layups
9) Teach team how to do a “running timout” – For example when there is a dead ball foul have team
sprint to coach for quick 15 second “timeout” on the floor
10) “We didn’t lose – we just ran out of time

Teach, demonstrate and tell your players that they have 1 dribble per second in late game
scenarios. That way if there is 4 seconds on the clock a player doesn’t have to look up – they know
they have time for 4 forward dribbles before the buzzer
