Phil Beckner is one of my friends and he is the assistant men’s basketball coach at Weber State.  He wanted me to pass on these basketball coaching notes to you.

Since arriving in San Antonio, Coach Springer has helped several
Middle school and high school programs reach the district finals. He is
currently the Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Castle Hills First
Baptist School. In 2011, Coach Springer led the CH Eagles to the Tapps
1A Regionals and was nominated for 1A Coach of the Year.

He has worked with D1, international and WNBA players.

Coach Tony Barone joined the Grizzlies in 2000 and then was announced as the interim head coach in 2006. Since that time has served as the Grizzlies Director of Player Personnel. He also was the head coach at Texas A&M from 1991-98 and the head coach of Creighton from 1985-91.

Coach Barone of the Memphis Grizzlies spoke at the Nike Basketball Clinic on how the Grizzlies defend the pick and roll. Coach Barone outlined a few key factors in being successful against the pick and roll:

1. Defense is an “illusion”

2. Help defenders must master “stunting” to the ball

3. Must stay connected to your man at all times

4. The best teams have loud communicators on defense

5. Practice 5 on 5 vs. the pick and roll.

The Grizzlies focus on having some basic “coverage calls” for how they are going to defend the pick and roll:

• · Red, Gold, Yellow, Black, Blue, and Surprise

Here is an example of Rudy Gay forcing the ball baseline and Dante Cunningham coming to trap the ball on the sideline. OJ Mayo has is toe on the nail of the FT line reading whether or not to help off on the role.

Chris Paul

They also have special coverages for certain players/teams they are playing. Here is an example how the Grizzlies played Chris Paul on the pick and roll. The screener’s defender plays completely off the screener to try and help control Chris Paul out of the paint.

The Shuffle offense creates good player movement and scoring chances for all five players and is most effective against man-to-man defenses. This offense works well with a smart and savvy team who has the patience to wait for a good scoring opportunity to develop and the aggressive nature to take advantage of the defenses mistakes. The shuffle offense like most continuities offenses may take some time to teach as each player must learn all five positions and the various options. Once the basic pattern is mastered all five players will be moving and changing positions inevitably creating mis-matches on a regular basis. A post’s defender will find themselves guarding their man outside of the paint where they are not comfortable, not to mention guards having to defend players in the post.

Once the offense is comprehended by the team it makes player substitution easier since you can substitute your best player on the bench rather than a guard for a guard or a post for a post, since all positions are interchangeable. Another added bonus is opponents may have trouble scouting this offense since a given player’s role is constantly changing.

Included are my notes on the Shuffle offense, pressure releases and counters, and transition looks. I hope that you find these notes helpful.
