Disc 1:
Even with the talent that North Carolina attracts, Coach Williams shows in this first practice how important learning the fundamentals of the game is. Williams breaks the practice into two segments: offensive and defensive fundamental skill development.

On offense, Coach Williams teaches the players the following concepts:

Posts work on in-game low post and trail post moves, while the guards work on attacking the rim with hard drives and precision jump-shooting.

Full-court team drills to develop their up-tempo primary break with drills such as: 3-on-0 transition, 3-on-2, 2-on-1 continuous and 110 in 4:30.

The team’s secondary break options: regular, B3, Dribble, among others.

The offensive set `Open’ as an alternative to their primary and secondary break

Freelance offense – whereby players learn to play together, out of their offense

Defensively, Coach Williams builds intensity, tenacity and intelligent ball pressure with drills such as:

Half-court defensive shell

`Step-Slide’ team defense

Inside shot `walls’

Challenging `outside shots’

Closeouts

Defending down and back screens

Disc 2:
Building off of practice one, the team continues with individual skill development as post players go through a series of breakdown drills from the `regular’ secondary break. The guards continue their individual skill development as they work on v-cuts and curl cuts.Defensively, the team continues to build their screen defense as they focus on coverage against: shadow screens, ball screens, and flare screens. In addition, Coach Williams has his players work on these concepts with their progression defensive shell drill. UNC learns to `talk early’ in order to set a good defensive tone for the possession.

Offensively, Coach Williams continues to build his team’s famous secondary break actions that have been a staple of Carolina’s offensive system. He runs them through their full-court secondary break series using use 5v0 and 5v5 game situations. Following walk-throughs of each option, the blue and white teams separate to work on their options out of secondary and `Open’ in the half-court. To conclude the offensive breakdowns of each offensive concept, Coach Williams has each team compete against one another in the half-court in 5-on-5 live.

Disc 3:
The third practice session, is a very competitive practice as the teachings in the first two practices are put into effect as two teams are pitted against one another to promote healthy competition. Learn the importance of rebounding and running in order to implement a successful fast breaking system. Coach Williams introduces the `pitch ahead drill’ which is designed to generate easy baskets in transition. Watch as the team works through simulated 5 on 5 live to learn the options in secondary break. Moreover, the team continues to implement elements of the `Open’ offensive set by breaking down the offense step-by-step.

On defense, the Tar Heels begin to look at closing out defensive possessions with successful on ball defense, shot contests and proper boxing out technique. In this third practice, Coach Williams teaches these elements of defense using drills such as:

Box out drill both in the half-court as well as on the fast break

Sideline guard defense

`Deny, help, deny’ drill.

Coach Williams will share how he gets his players in shape with on court conditioning, heavy ropes, and exercise bikes.Bonus Weight room Coverage:
In addition to the three practices, get a bonus look inside the weight room at UNC, as their strength and conditioning coach puts the players through a rigorous workout, showing how they train early in the season to prevent injury and build muscle for the upcoming season.

This detailed look at Carolina Basketball provides any coach with a look at how to teach younger athletes the ways and traditions of a program. It gives great insight into bringing a younger team along at a pace where they are out of their comfort zone, but are able to pick up concepts quickly.
with Terry Layton, Nike Scout and International Consultant for Latin America;
300+ Wins at the High School, Junior College and College level in the U.S., 300+ wins at the International level

See how international influences can improve your players.

Terry Layton, International Nike Scout on Latin America, has put together a set of DVD’s that will guide you through the ins and outs of international warm-up, shooting, full court drills, and explosive training. Coach Layton’s teaching will help you build your players starting with dynamic warm-up drills using a basketball to half court shooting drills that some of the best international shooters use. Coach Layton uses a progressive style to demonstrate how the international game has become a league comparable to the NBA.

Warm-up Drills
Coach Layton likes to add what he calls “the magic of the ball” to his warm up routines. By adding the ball to the warm ups it makes practice time more efficient. He believes that more time players have with the ball in their hand then the more fun they will have and more skills they can learn. He describes how to build a progressive warm-up routine with and without a basketball that focuses on basketball skills. He will teach you an order to follow as you work your players before practice begins. Your players will learn how to communicate with each other effectively and advance their skills as you implement a progressive warm-up routine.

Coach Layton uses reaction drills to develop a “thinking on their feet” mentality. To develop instinctual skills using coordination and reacting to unknown situations as they develop. He uses a progression in his ball handling skills to make them more complex and difficult as they progress, while still working on the same basic skills. Layton discusses the rhythm of play and how the change of speeds makes players hard to guard and how to train that aspect.

Coach Layton demonstrates an All in One drill that will help your players get game shots Each phase of the drill builds one skill after another. Layton shows you how to maximize two baskets to develop lay-up skills, post player shots, perimeter shots, dribble penetration and relocation, and passing skills. His All in One drill is the perfect warm-up routine that you can use and incorporate any other skill you want to work on.

Shooting Drills
Coach Layton offers some of the best shooting drills he has picked up over years of experience at the international and national level. Each shooting drill comes from some of the top coaches all over the world and gives you the opportunity to think about how you are training your shooters.

You will get 15 different shooting drills that incorporate the use of only two baskets. Coach Layton has perfected the art of maximizing your gym space, time, and entire team to get efficient workouts in a timely manner. Each drill is broken down into various phases that demonstrate game situations so your players are better prepared for any shooting situation. He provides conditioning, interval training, and combination drills that any coaching level must have to improve their players shooting ability

Coach Layton will use the entire half court to help you build a consistent shooter. Each drill will allow you to work on preparing for the shot, shooting over a defender, shooting off the dribble, using fakes to get open and post series shots to develop a strong post presence. His combination drills will help turn your players into conditioned and consistent basketball players.

Coach Layton provides you with four competitive shooting games that are fun and engaging and at the same time, push your shooters out of their comfort zone. He demonstrates dice free throws where your post players are practicing their blocking out technique and your free throw shooters are put into pressure situations.

This is a must have DVD for any coach that is looking to build a dynamic warm-up routine for their players to get lose for a game or before practice begins instead of using the same old lay-up/jump shot routine.

166 minutes. (2 DVDs). 2013.

with Terry Layton, Nike Scout and International Consultant for Latin America;
300+ Wins at the High School, Junior College and College level in the U.S., 300+ wins at the International level

Terry Layton has literally been all over the world as a coach, scout and player. The drills you will see in this video are a collection of all the international exposure Layton has had, giving you the best of what is being done in the international game.

Accustomed to giving clinics in the USA and throughout the world, he shows you innovative drills and concepts not seen elsewhere. All drills are done with only two baskets, as that is typically what many international coaches have available.

Coach Layton uses a progressive style to demonstrate how the international game has become a league comparable to the NBA.

Explosion Drills
Get ready for a unique perspective that is about to give you’re an explosive edge. Coach Layton lays out the foundation for training your players to move at different speeds. He describes and outlines his Explosion Theory of Training with whiteboard diagrams and on-court demonstrators. You get an overview of explosion drills you can use to make your players faster, provide your players with a better understanding of changing speeds, and how and when to use it to their advantage.

Coach Layton goes over 10 aspects of explosion training, which includes increasing speed anytime players change directions; to move faster after making fakes to gain advantage; to explode after passing and screening and to get into rebounding position; to explode into position on transition whether it’s into offense or defense. Layton gives two drills on technique, two drills on fakes with the ball and ball handling moves and with out the ball, three drills on passing and exploding on outlets, cuts and penetrate and kicks and more.Coach Layton sets his sights on the defensive side of things next. He talks about how necessary it is to explode into position on trapping and gives two drills pertaining to what he calls long and short traps and a drill on pressure defense. To fill out the rest of the video he ends with what he calls explosive plays. These are offensive plays that change the tempo of their offense into a fast break type of offense in the half court. This type of offense is not seen here in the United States but can be effective elsewhere in the world. It goes onto his thoughts of changing speeds and tempo.

Full Court Drills
Coach Layton outlines seven drills that he has picked up from some of the best international coaches. With each drill, he describes how to incorporate Fartlek Training or continuous interval training to make every drill feel like a game situation. Each full court drill works to master your players fundamental habits and works to build their skills into explosive basketball players. Layton works to help you master the lost art of passing by teaching your players to effectively pass to an open player where he wants to ball. He uses a new concept of Belly passes to get your players ready for any open shot.

Coach Layton teaches you his Argentine Drill that is great for any pre-game warm-up routine or pre-practice routine and will have your players loose and focused. In his Chinese Drill your players will learn how to attack the basket off a pick-and-roll or pick-and-pop situation. In his Mexican 3 Ball Drill, your players will master the art of triple threat and shot prep as they look to attack the basket off of a penetrate and kick situation. With every drill, your players moving the length of the floor improving their conditioning and developing their quickness.

If you are a coach at any level that is looking for drills to maximize your gym space and to push your players to a new level of training and moving, this is a must have training DVD. Coach Layton gives you an advantage over your opponents, training your players to consistently blow by their opponents leaving them guessing at how to stop you.

109 minutes. 2013.
