I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Dribble Drive Motion Offense by Bradley Zellner

The dribble drive motion offense is an attacking offense where every player on the floor must want to attack the basket on every possession. The basic philosophy is the ball handler tries to push the ball for a layup. The key to the offense is spacing. Without proper spacing the offense will not work to its full potential. Players should focus on staying at the NBA 3 point line for proper spacing.

The Dribble Drive Motion Offense is not for every team. Your players need to have the ability get to the basket and also have a decent 3 point jump shot. Your post players do not need to be traditional back to the basket players. They need to be comfortable catching the ball on the move. Post player also needs to be able to shoot a 10 foot and in jumper.

The Dribble Drive Motion Offense is made for an athletic team but it also focuses on breaking down the defense. Teams do not need to be athletic for the DDM to work. The players just need to have an understanding of creating gaps and how to read defense. For the DDM to be effective it must be free-wheeling and active. The DDM works on breaking down the defense. When ran properly, it will take 3-4 offensive attacks to break down the defense. Teams also have to be patient when running the DDM.

The Dribble Drive Motion Offense focuses on two things on the court: 1) The layup and 2) three-point shot. The Dribble Drive Motion Offense loves the layup and likes the three point shot. There are some players that have the ability to knock down the mid range jump shot. The mid-range jump shot is not encouraged. You do not want to discourage the player from shooting but just need to have them understand good shot vs. bad shot.

Coaches have learned to defend Dribble Drive Motion Offense by packing the lane and making it difficult for the offense to attack the basket. It is important to get the defense moving in order to have an opportunity to break down the defense. I have included 4 sets that flow into Dribble Drive Motion Offense. After the offense runs these sets they will be able to attack the defense with DDM.
