Dribble Drive Attack Offense | Attack 123 by Al Cuevas
We run a version of Vance Walberg’s Dribble Drive Attack Offense and love the spacing and scoring opportunities it provides for our team. I spent time watching Walberg’s practices at Pepperdine and talking to him in 2007 and was able to learn a lot from him.
If you plan to run this offense skill development is the most important focus you should have. You need to have players that can dribble, pass, and shoot. When we have a very young team we really can’t run this system because inexperienced players have a difficulty making good decisions at the pace we expect them to play. We spend a lot of time working on ball-handling & shooting the basketball. If you’re not willing to dedicate at least an hour per practice working on skill development you shouldn’t run the Dribble Drive Attack.
One of the most important rotations in our Attack Offense is what we call Attack 123. Most of the time this play develops naturally within the offense, but the last couple of years I’ve drilled it so that the spacing is exactly what I want it to be.
We call it Attack 123 because the drives to the basket are in order with our #1, #2, and #3 according to our player numbering system. We also run Attack 143 which is the same play to the left side of the court. These 3 drives if run aggressively with good spacing put the defense into 3 consecutive help and recover situations and in my opinion if you can do that you are going to create scoring opportunities.
Our #1 player aggressively drives to either the right or left “Drop Zone” (which is roughly between the free-throw line and the top of the key) looking to score. If the defense helps the #1 then kicks the ball to the #2 and then cuts to the ball side corner, the #2 then drives the middle aggressively while the #3 is re-spacing over. While all this is happening the #4 & #5 are re-spacing depending on where the ball is. The same thing happens when this is run to the left except the #4 replaces the #2.
If you have two good penetrators this action will get them opportunities at the basket to score or it will get the #5’s defender to come over & help which leads to easy baskets for your #5.
