Doc Rivers 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Coaching Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Doc is well spoken. He spent a lot of time on how he dealt with the Sterling situation.

Bullet points that I felt were important:
BE CLUTTER FREE: mind etc.
One voice for the team/organization
You need to know how to coach on the run

1. SET THE TABLE DETERMINE YOUR TEAM | Basketball Coaching Notes
• What does winning look like?
• What does a championship look like?
• They are two different things
• BUY IN
• If we work together it can work for ALL

2. CULTURE | Basketball Coaching Notes
• Make it your home arena: They share an arena with the Lakers.
• He got all the Laker banners taken down during Clipper home games. It was met with some resistance at first. Reason is they didn’t want to make the Lakers mad.
• Doc wanted to make Lakers mad and make a statement.
• He controls what players pics go up and who is on tickets etc. He controls the chemistry
• NBA players can become STARS by buying into a role: same as HS
• BODY LANGAUAGE: remember your teammates see it and feed off of it.

3. PLAYERS | Basketball Coaching Notes
• Try not to make changes but add to the core: Always trying to get better
• He wants separation in his top 10: Top players need to be better than next 5 etc. C
• We as coaches know who the best ones are but they need to prove it and separate.
• Winners sacrifice to help team win: Some only want to win if it’s comfortable for them.
• When players sacrifice they will give you even more
• Ray Allen gave up 50% of his shots which was 62% of his touches: Garnet and Pierce each gave up 25%: They sacrificed and bought in
• GET BACK on the release of the shot
• Discipline and execution down the stretch
• Allow players to be free but FREEDOM without DISCIPLINE is dangerous
• LOW CHARACTER players cannot be developed
• EXECUTION: ATO/BOB/SOB
• Doc has players draw up plays
• HAMMER: is a cross screen into a PNR
CLIPPER BASKETBALL: I coach to see them get it!
