I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

David Joerger Memphis Grizzlies Set Plays by Wes Kosel

Attached in this playbook are two set plays from Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach David Joerger. Joerger just completed his first year as the head coach of the Grizzlies leading them to a 50-32 record and a #7 seed in the playoffs. The Grizzlies lost in 7 games to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Joerger has had a unique path to becoming a NBA Head Coach. He first served as a head coach in several minor leagues (IBA, CBA, and USBL) before coaching in the D-League. In one year in the D-League, Joerger led the Dakota Wizards to a Championship over the Colorado 14ers. He then went on to serve as an assistant for the Grizzlies before taking over as head coach at the start of the 2013-2014 season.

David Joerger Memphis Grizzlies Set Plays – 1-4 High Gasol/Randolph Hi/Lo

1 passes to 5 (Gasol) at the high post then loops around Gasol to screen for 3. 3 cuts to the basket looking for the pass from Gasol. If 3 isn’t open on the initial cut, he cuts back to the wing off of a second screen from 1. If he still doesn’t have a shot, Gasol dribbles across the free-throw line as 4 (Randolph) cuts down the lane line then loops into the lane posting up. Gasol looks to make the hi/lo pass to Randolph inside. If he doesn’t have an angle to pass, Gasol can pass to either wing who looks inside to Randolph.

David Joerger Memphis Grizzlies Set Plays – Conley Stagger

1 (Conley) passes to 2 then cuts through to the opposite low post. 2 looks inside to 4 then passes to 5 at the top of the key. 5 then dribbles toward 2 to give him the ball on a dribble hand-off. 2 uses the hand-off from 5 as a screen as 4 and 5 set a staggered screen for Conley. Conley cuts to the wing or corner for a shot.
