I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Dave Rose BYU Cougars 4-Out Offense by Wes Kosel

Here are two plays from Brigham Young Cougars head coach Dave Rose. Rose just completed his 9th season as head coach at BYU. In those 9 years, he was compiled a 232-78 record winning almost 75% of his games. He has never had a losing record as a head coach, and has won the Mountain West Conference four times. The Cougars joined the West Coast Conference in 2011, and just finished 2nd behind Gonzaga in 2013-2014. Before taking over as the head coach, Rose served as an assistant coach at BYU from 1997-2005. Prior to 1997, Rose spent time as the head coach and assistant coach at Dixie College. He started his coaching career at the high school level coaching for four seasons before making the jump into the college ranks. Rose played college basketball at the University of Houston alongside Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. In his senior year, the Houston Cougars made it to the national championship game losing to Jim Valvano’s North Carolina State Wolfpack.

If 4 isn’t open, 5 sets a ball-screen for 3. 3 drives across the floor as 5 rolls to the basket and 2 set a flare screen for 1. If 1 gets the ball, 5 screens across for 4. 1 looks for a shot or to pass to 4 at the basket.

1 passes to 2, then joins 4 to set a staggered screen for 3 in the corner. 3 curls the screen looking for the pass from 2. 1 then screens for 4 who gets the ball from 2 at the top of the key. Once 4 has the ball, 3 cuts to the wing off of a screen from 1 and 1 cuts to the opposite wing off of a staggered screen from 5 and 2. 4 looks to pass to 3 or 1.
