Chicago Bulls High Post Action and Scoring Set Plays by Reggie Bibb

NBA Draft Combine

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Chicago Bulls High Post Action and Scoring Set Plays

Not enough can be said about Tom Thibodeau and the things his teams do on the defensive end; the Chicago Bulls’ team defensive numbers speak for themselves. I really like what he does on the offensive end as well, especially the way he uses Noah as a facilitator at the high post. In Chicago’s system, Noah does a great job of playing the high post as a ball mover and screener, and he does a great job of setting ball screens on his dribble handoffs.

I have linked a video demonstrating Noah’s energy and action at the high post, resulting in a Heinrich three.

I have also diagrammed some scoring sets that Thibodeau used in two of their games last week, one against the Spurs and the other against the Thunder.
Against the Spurs, for the first play of the game, the Bulls ran a set in which Noah hit Gasol at the basket after a shuffle cut.

Against the Thunder, Thibodeau drew up two different late-game sets that resulted in three points both possessions. On one possession, E’twan Moore drove baseline and hit Dunleavy in the opposite corner coming off of a fade from Nikola Mirotic.

The other play came off of a late game SLOB drawn up for Gasol. After getting some crossing action, they through the ball into Gasol from out of bounds in an attempt to get a low post ISO opportunity. When Westbrook doubled down on Gasol, Gasol kicked it out to E’twan Moore for the corner three.
