Buzz Williams Marquette Slob Play by Adam Short

ball screen plays

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Buzz Williams Marquette Slob Play by Adam Short

I got this Buzz Williams Marquette Slob Play from watching Marquette play St. Johns on 3/2/2013. Marquette ran this play during the final seconds of the game that helped them get the victory in dramatic fashion. It is a simple SLOB play that really puts pressure on the defense. I am a big fan of screening for the ball screener because it takes away the possibility of the defender having a successful hedge on the ball screen. The play starts off with 4 setting a down screen for 2. 4 does not sprint to 2 to set the down screen, 2 runs his defender off of 4. 1 will hit 2. 1 will then sprint to the left corner. Once 2 catches the ball, 4 will sprint to screen for 5. 4 will clear out to the weak side short corner. 5 will sprint to set a ball screen for 2. 5’s angle is key with the ball screen. 5 wants 2’s defender shoulders to be in the middle of his chest. This will create an angle for 2 to attack downhill. Once 2 has the ball, he has to go make a play. Most likely as a coach, you are running this play with 8-10 seconds left on the clock. The  Buzz Williams Marquette Slob Play is a great play for your players to remember so you can draw this play up on the huddle with the game on the line.
