Bob Huggins Motion Offense Set Play

Wisconsin Badgers Basketball

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Bob Huggins Motion Offense Set Play

Bob Huggins has always been known for his trademark Motion Offense, but upon closer look, Huggins teams also do a good job running a variety of half court sets which show good variety, movement, and screening actions.

This set is ideal when you’re looking to get your 5 man or a mismatch situation isolated in the post off a double low backscreen.

Right from the first pass, there’s a lot of movement keeping the defense occupied setting up the backscreening action and giving your 5 man a chance to operate.

The end action can be run two different ways. When they ran the play the first time, Staten backscreened Holton into the lane (almost more of a “rub screen” action) and the second time, Staten sprinted above the arc receiving the pass and rejected the ball screen with a good first dribble move opening a jumper in the corner.

This is a really good action set for any level! People have to understand that it’s not always the X’s and O’s. It’s not the plays you and all the strategy, its about relationships. If you don’t have an relationship with the people that you are teaching or the team that you are coaching, then they will never do something special.
