Michigan State Spartans

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Bo Ryan Wisconsin Badgers On Flare Screen Play

Staying with the 2015 Final Four Series I looked at the other side of the Kentucky/Wisconsin Match-up in the first National Semi-Final. Wisconsin is known for running their swing offense to generate their offense but with the amount of talent they had on this team Coach Ryan gave them some basic quick hitter actions to get the ball to play makers in space. In this specific, Bo Ryan Wisconsin Badgers On Flare Screen Play, they made a modification to the common roll & replace ball screen set in which the 4/5 set a ball screen then roll to the rim while the other big lifts to the top of the key replacing him. This makes it tough for the defense to keep somebody in the hole to defend the roll guy.

In this Bo Ryan Wisconsin Badgers On Flare Screen Play after Frank Kaminsky sets the ball screen and begins to roll, the 4 man Nigel Hayes screens in for Kaminsky who flares to the wing. With Kaminsky’s man defending the ball screen and retreating quickly to get back to him, Hayes’ defender is in help side to pick up the rolling Kaminsky. Hayes is able to create a deep screening angle to pin Kaminsky’s defender in freeing him up for a wide open jump shot. This small variation was very effective as Kentucky’s bigs were more used to covering the traditional roll and replace action with Kaminsky rolling to the rim, and Hayes replacing him.

One of the important things of note in this action is that Nigel Hayes held the screen, he didn’t set the screen and look for the ball. He screened Kaminsky’s defender until the defender beat the screen and then he went towards the basket for a post up or rebounding position. A solid screen makes it very difficult for the defender as he is trying to cover three different things in a very short period of time. First covering the ball screen, then getting back to his man, then beating a flare screen, then closing out. It forces a post defender to do a few things he may not be very comfortable doing.
