Billy Donovan Florida Spread Pick and Roll Offense
Billy Donovan was just hired as the coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder and is making the leap to the NBA. His offensive style has been lauded at the NCAA level and widely considered one of the best Pick & Roll Offenses in the game of basketball. He has tweaked and adjusted his offense to the modern game and it all based upon what Billy Donovan thinks the hardest things to guard in basketball are. His offenses at Florida typically had a point guard who can control the game attacking the basket to create for others, & a stretch four big man who could shoot the ball. I can’t think of a better situation offensively than to have Russell Westbrook & Serge Ibaka to fit both of those roles and throwing in Kevin Durant doesn’t hurt the capabilities of his offense. Predicated on attacking in transition and flow with lots of ball movement and spacing, his offense should mesh perfectly with typical NBA style of play.
The Day that Billy Donovan was hired, I saw the numerous players that Billy Donovan has developed that later went on to play in the NBA. That list is impressive; seventeen NBA players in 19 years as a NCAA Head Coach is an amazing display of collegiate preparation for professional success in basketball. My hat’s off to him for having a good eye for talent, the ability to convince these young men and their parents that Florida was where they should be, as well as the ability to prepare these young fellas for the most elite basketball association in the world.
If I’m Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka, Steven Adams or anyone other than Russell Westbrook, I’m pretty excited about this hire because it seems clear to me, that Billy Donovan likes shooters and pick and roll guys and features them in his offense.
