I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Ben Jacobson Northern Iowa Panthers Quick Hitters by Wes Kosel

Attached are 2 quick hitter plays from Northern Iowa head coach Ben Jacobson. Ben Jacobson is in his 9th season as head coach of UNI. Before taking over as the head coach of the Panthers, Jacobson served as an assistant at UNI, North Dakota State, and North Dakota. Jacobson played at North Dakota before joining the staff in 1993. Jacobson was named North Dakota Mr. Basketball in 1989 and ended his career at North Dakota as the all-time assist leader. In his first 8 years at UNI, Jacobson compiled a 166-101 record with 2 first place finishes in the Missouri Valley Conference and 2 NCAA Tournament Appearances including a Sweet 16 run in 2009-2010. This season, UNI is currently 23-2 (12-1 Missouri Valley Conference). The only 2 losses this season came against VCU (in double overtime) and to Evansville (49-52). With a 12-1 record in conference, UNI is tied with Wichita State. The two teams match up for the second time on Saturday, February 28th in Wichita, KS.

Ben Jacobson Northern Iowa Panthers Quick Hitters – High Ball-Screen Wing Flare
1 dribbles off of a high ball-screen from 5 at the top of the key and dribbles towards the left wing. 5 rolls to the basket. On the backside of the floor, 4 sets a flare screen for 2 who moves out to the right wing for a shot. 1 can look to score himself, pass to 5 on the roll, pass to 3 in the ball-side corner, or pass to 2 on the flare.

This play is designed to get the point guard in a situation to stress the defense with dribble penetration. 2 clears to the opposite side of the floor as 1 dribbles off of 4 to the right. 1 attacks the basket as 4 rolls to the basket and 5 pops.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
