Basketball Training Program | Practice Organization by Mark Chapman

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Basketball Training Program | Practice Organization by Mark Chapman

Practice Organization
These notes are from my files but doesn’t have a coach listed. I hope you are able to use some of the information below:

The most important aspect to whether you reach your potential is our practice. You can only be as good as your practice effort every day. You should never have a practice that is easier than a game.
You must have the right combination of learning from the drills through game situations. You should feel that you’ve been given the best preparation possible which will give you an edge over your opponent.
Basketball Training Program | Practice will be:
Intense
Genuine effort
Build for improvement
Pushed physically & mentally
Practice will consist of
Offensive moves & shooting 20 min
Mass Drills 10 min
Defensive Drills 40 min
Multiple Drills 30 min
Team Drills 50 min
Free throws shot in ladder rounds
1-2 rounds to conclude practice
Pre-practice drills will be run 10 min. prior to practice

Basketball Training Program |  Practice appearance:
Positive attitude
Focus on performance
Shirts tucked in
Always hustle
MUST be prompt to everything we do
Keep basketballs clean & pumped up
First two weeks will consist of a morning practice devoted exclusively to shooting.
No pre-drills in the morning

We have a new basketball coaching contributor in Mark Chapman who is the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Hamilton Township High School in Columbus, Ohio. Coach Mark Chapman always has great basketball plays and basketball coaching clinic notes to share with the basketball coaching world. Make sure that you check out his basketball X’s and O’s material.  You will love some of his coaching ideas.
