A Screen the Screener play by Ron Sen

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Coach Sen presents a Screen the Screener play that is implemented to reinforce young players knowledge of the principles of the game…

Our players are starting to embrace off the ball screens after a lengthy period of encouragement. Here’s a play we’re working on. We first tell the inbounder that her first job is to get the ball in SAFELY but present multiple options for scoring

  • 2 sets a diagonal screen for 4, who dives to the hoop for a possible layup.

  • 5 sets a screen for the initial screener who looks for a wing jumper.

  • 1 works to be a safety outlet and 5 opens to the ball after screening.

Screen The Screener PlayFor our young players, we believe introducing and reinforcing principles is critical to their long-term development.
