2014 Coaching U Live Overtime Panelists

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

What do you look for in a point guard?

1. Basketball IQ – Organize what we are doing on the floor. You coach during the week. On game night you manage the game. You want a good point guard out there who runs the game well.
2. Maximize their talent and then fit their talent into their style.
3. If you are going to be a good defensive team, you have to have a point guard that can control the ball.

You have to learn to be decisive. Make a decision and stick to it. And execute it. It indicates to the people you’re leading that you are confident. Be careful of the ready, aim, aim, aim, aim syndrome.

The more you’re around, the more you’re going to ask for your opinion. Keep lists of ideas.

What to look for in a wing?

What do the best coaches do? | 2014 Coaching U Live Overtime Panelists
– Clear and consistent communication
– Adaptability
– Creative people. We must entertain them while we educate them.
– Organization. Being succinct. Being direct.
– Be yourself! Don’t try to be someone else.
– Be succinct. Coach in bullet points, not in paragraphs. “Back to the area of attack” on screens.

Coaching a team is like flying a plane. There’s going to be turbulence, sometimes a lot, but your job is to land the plane.

You can’t fool dogs, kids, or nba players.

Basketball is a simple game, but the people, they’re complicated, so you need to deal with them.
