Changing Defenses | 2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
“We are not going to let you play the way you practice.”
Disrupt.
We want to make you prepare for us.
Full court presses |2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
“Squeeze” – Face guard their point guard with your 4 man (or whoever’s guarding their inbounder)
Trap him immediately if he catches the inbounds pass.
If another player catches the inbounds pass, X4 (or whoever’s guarding the inbounder) must recover to the 4 man.
Now, X1 face guards their point guard….everyone else is man to man.
“Lock” – Trap first pass and others lock-down/deny (don’t let your man get it)
Encourage the pass back to the inbounder, make him handle it.
1-2-2 Contain press | 2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
Top man is very, very active
Can’t allow sideline pass
Normal rotations
Trap usually comes on reversal
Must deny middle pass
2-1-2 Press | 2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
Deny the guard to guard pass HARD
Top two guys on press must pressure hard and force dribble up the sideline.
Opposite top player denies middle when ball is opposite.
When this happens, the middle man of the 2-1-2 comes to trap on the sideline.
Back players take sideline pass away and middle away
Guarding the ball screen | 2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
Hedge high and hard.
Foot to foot hedge. If your man is screening, you call out the screen, get your feet parallel to his, the dribbler must see your numbers and he must change directions.
On the ball defender must go over the top.
“Downing” or “Icing” the ball screen | 2012 Tom Herrion KABC Clinic Notes
Side ball screen 1 has the ball, 5 comes from top of key to ball screen.
X1 immediately jumps to the direction of the screen and gets over the top of it before 1 can dribble off it.
X5 immediately gets on the other side of the dribbler…or “zones up”
This keeps 1 from using the screen and X5 is helping on the opposite side of the screen.
In a 5-out ball screen situation, X4 is always the basket protector.
